About Shengwu
I earned my Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University (MSU) in 2013, and my major field is Econometrics. At MSU, I took lots of courses in other fields other than Economics; for example, I took almost three years of Statistics and Probability courses which lead to a Master Degree in Statistics; especially, my training in Spatial Statistics spans beyond Statistics Department: I took two Spatial Statistics courses in Geography Department and did two course projects and both are extended into working papers now. I took four Finance or Finance related courses: Investment theory, Financial Econometrics, Exchange Rates and Capital Flows, Stochastic Models in Finance; and I sat in the course of Corporate Finance. I also had a Master Degree in Applied Mathematics and Bachelor Degree in Mathematics Education. So all those courses laid a solid foundation for my teaching in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics and other related interdisciplinary fields.
First of all, I love teaching; and I have plenty of teaching experience from elementary (private tutor), secondary (private tutor and three years of high school math teacher) to college ( visiting/assistant professor of Economics, Statistics and Survey Analytics) . I have taught various subjects including Economics, Statistics, Mathematics and Survey Analytics. As an international instructor, I have the unique angle to understand the special needs of minority students and gained experience about how to help them better. I even had worked as Labor Economist at a state government agency. Those experiences have improved my ability to translate, teach and explain complicated problems to students and general audiences in a way that considers their unique understanding of the topic. After years’ of teaching experience both in Classroom and online, both small and large size, I am confident that I would be an excellent instructor.

I like teaching because I enjoy the sense of success to help students get to know new
knowledge. Since my first job as a math teacher at a high school, I have been learning about how
to become a better teacher and I know that this will continue for the rest of my career. My
teaching philosophy can be expressed by an old Chinese saying which states, “Tell me, I'll
forget; Show me, I'll remember; Involve me, I'll understand.” So in my teaching, I try to get
students involved as much as possible.
