About Shani

I graduated from MIT in Civil Engineering.

Philadelphia HS for Girls Summa Cum Laude Calculus BC 4. Tutored Math all thru school. I love Math esp geometry. It's fun and applicable everywhere. Math is in Dance, Music, Art, Cooking, Sports, Science, Cars, Colors, Politics, Medicine, everything.

I also tutor Biology. I don't know why I love Biology more than all the other Sciences, perhaps because I can see how it applies directly to our daily lives, to our well being and health and safety.

I teach HOW to enthusiastically study for FUN such that my students go on to excel all around.

I look to the multiple intelligences and various perceptual styles to customize a methodology that works best for YOU. Your confidence will soar once we determine and apply YOUR approach to the subject.

I truly enjoy having people see Math and Science everywhere. I enjoy exploring the multiple intelligences of my students and their learning styles. I LOVE seeing them fly thru what was once difficult. I love seeing them tackle new things on their own using the skills I taught them. I feel so proud. I love when some little thing that I thought didn't even take turns out to have made a huge difference in the success of my students. They tell me later.

I began tutoring when the other children in second grade wanted me to just give them the answers. My mother is a teacher as are many of my relatives teachers and school superintendents. Teaching is in me. Also, I attended schools for gifted children where I was exposed to elite teaching methods and learning practices that I am now happy to share with my students.

As a little girl, I helped my mother correct her junior high school students' papers. I have been tutoring over 55 years. I am happy to share the secrets of my own academic success

Determine what their goal is in working with a math tutor such as me.

Look at what they have already done. Look at where they aim to go. Look at what is missing or in the way.   Chart a course from A to B. Determine their interests to develop a thematic approach. As they work, try different modalities to see which ones are most effective and for which ones they have an affinity. Tweak approach as new information arises.

Set new goals and continue

Many many types of students including gifted enrichment, learning disabled, unable to read, unable to count, college students, adult learners, ESL, hyperactive, young, old and everything in between, etc... I am even taking up ASL. I have yet to learn braille. My own four children have Sensory Integration issues that we successfully overcame.

Do a test run with the tutor to see if you can relate to them and if they can relate to you. Have a poor performance test to work from.

Being interviewed by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Have I completed all of what the teacher asked me to do?

What text and workbooks do you recommend to go with this computer application we use for this class?

On what do you think I need to work?

How can I make up points to improve my average?
