About Heather

Being a math teacher during the day, I am up to date on current teaching strategies and any recent changes to standards. I'm also a big fan of making math not so scary since so many of my students find math to be scary.

I've wanted to teach since the third grade, participated in future teacher's club in high school, and went on to earn a degree in mathematics. This all put me on the track to earning my degree in secondary mathematics education so I can work with students in the subject that many students find the most difficult.

My undergraduate degree is in mathematics and my graduate degree is in secondary mathematics education. I am a middle school math teacher for Bridgeport Public Schools and my middle school math team brought home first place in the city wide math competition last year.

About the lesson

I typically start with looking at recent school work or I give a general test depending on their grade or level of past math achievement. I then find their strengths and their areas of need so we focus our efforts in appropriate areas. Then, I make a general calendar with small goals so that we stay on track if we have a limit of time. I'll assess their work as we go so we make sure we are making sufficient progress towards our goal.

I have worked with students as young as three up through 12th grade. I have also worked with potential teachers who needed help on the Praxis standardize math test.
