My teaching ethos is as follows I aim to use activities which stretch understanding, and offer variety in methods of learning, such as group work and peer tutoring. By doing this and allowing pupils time to internalise each new process, so that they will have greater opportunity to see the connections between topics, pupils will be able to confidently tackle any number of mathematical problems posed to them. During the subject enhancement course and my post graduate studies so far, I have been exposed to and personally discovered vast quantities of resources such as NRich, the Standards Unit produced by Malcolm Swann and the Bowland Mathematics assessment tasks, where pupils are given the opportunity to develop their own methods and explore topics. I will utilise these resources to encourage mathematical thought and discussion within the classroom whilst ensuring learning is taking place.
I am aware that there are many elements that influence effective learning; factors such as teaching styles, learning environment and teacher characteristics all have a big impact on the experiences of and the outcomes for the learner. As well as good subject knowledge and understanding, other important characteristics of teachers are a strong sense of professional values, enthusiasm, and the ability to self-reflect and to help pupils self-reflect. Giving pupils a sense of independence and control over their learning has also been shown to improve learning, as well as enhance the teacher-pupil relationship.

I am a fully qualified Maths teacher with over 10 years experience, specialising in GCSE and A Level Maths. My experience consists of teaching both the old and new exam specifications, with a range of extensive training regarding examiner expectations. I have also had the opportunity to teach BTEC Level 3 Engineering Maths, which gave me the chance to broaden my mathematical skills and knowledge.
