About Tahmid

I hold a 2.1 in Political Economy from King's College London and am about to begin an MSc in Political Theory at the London School of Economics, so close reading, essay construction, and argument are skills I use daily, not just teach.

I have two years of experience tutoring English, so I am familiar with the key texts, debates and the attitudes of examiners. Prior to this, I mentored students in debating with Debate Mate, helping a team win the Tower Hamlets borough competition and reach the London finals. I also invigilate GCSE and A Level exams, which does give me a close and practical view of exam conditions.

Professionally, I have spent 3 years consulting at Deloitte and, following this, had a 6-month stint performing research (and writing grant applications) for Variety, the children's charity. Effective language is my central toolkit, and professional competence and high ambition is my context.

I want to make sure these sessions are low pressure, highly productive, and interesting. I am patient, positive and professional. By creating a stable environment from which to guide textual analysis and essay-writing, I aim to form stronger connections in the minds of my students between enjoyment, analysis and writing. In my experience, this has led to consistently more effective writing approaches, better scoring essays and less stress going into critical exams.

My approach to tutoring is built upon confidence and neuroplasticity, not memorisation.

I start by identifying exactly where a student is losing marks (essay structure, argument development, or general exam technique) and build a plan around that gap, rather than working through generic worksheets. I draw on techniques from competitive debating, which I taught for a year with Debate Mate: structuring a point clearly, backing it with evidence, and anticipating counterarguments. In my experience, this has translated directly into stronger GCSE and A-Level essays, because examiners reward exactly that kind of structured, persuasive writing.

My lessons will typically run for 60 minutes, which is long enough to properly unpack a technique or work through a past-paper question together, without losing focus. I usually split a session between a short focused teaching segment and applied practice (planning or writing under timed conditions), before reviewing your work together so my feedback can land while the work is still fresh. I am highly patient, solid and personable; these sessions will be productive, low stakes, and, hopefully, quite fun. This is where neuroplasticity comes into it: by making essay-writing and textual analysis enjoyable, and dispelling the highly stressful (almost like diffusing a bomb) experience that schools instil when teaching English, my students will become more creative, more competent and more confident in their written voice.

I have been tutoring for the past two years. I will mesh with most students, but, of course, take trial sessions seriously to ensure that we are both a good fit for each other. I achieved A*s for both GCSE English Literature and Language (2016), an A in A Level Government and Politics (2018), and achieved a high 2.1 in Political Economy at King's College London (2021); I am due to begin my MSc in Political Theory at the London School of Economics this September, and would be delighted to tutor a small number of students while I do so.

My lessons are aimed at GCSE and A-Level students (ages 14–18) studying English Language or Literature, particularly those who understand the material but struggle to translate that into strong exam answers, or those who need a confidence boost going into exam season.
