About Hunter

Hello! My name is Hunter and I really look forward to meeting you! I am currently a Graduate Student at the University of British Columbia pursuing my Masters in Math Education, and I previously earned my Bachelors in Mathematics from the University of Washington. In case you couldn't tell, math is my passion! I love the opportunity of being able to share the complex beauty of an overlooked subject like mathematics. In addition to my academics, I have spent 2+ years running Calculus Seminars at the University of Washington, so I am more than experienced in managing student concerns, fears, and overall discomfort in math. It is my hope that you will not only learn math with me, but conquer its intimidating exterior and discover the amazing elegance within!

My tutoring style is based around my 2+ years of experience running Calculus Seminars at the University of Washington for undergraduate students and the related trainings associated with the position. I emphasize the following items heavily:

- Trial and Failure; there is no learning without trying, and there is no trying without failure. Learning to cope with and overcome failure is scientifically the most powerful way to make your brain form stronger connections, and the topics/problems I choose to cover emphasize this.
- Collaboration; learning is never intended to be an individual activity, and the act of active communication with peers and teachers can reveal new ideas and ways of thinking about problems. Through collaboration, my goal is for you to feel confident attacking a problem in multiple ways.
- Active Recall; we study best when we interweave topics and questions from across a subject rather than focusing one at a time. I work to consistently remind students of past problems to make sure they are consistently retaining material.

Typical lesson plans will vary based on the subject, but it is not uncommon for a 1 hour session to be spent covering only 1-2 topics across 3-5 problems; I purposefully choose to cover problems that promote deeper, analytical, and cross-disciplinary thinking. I will often let students attempt problems themselves and talk themselves (and me) through their work, asking questions to probe and provide stepping stones for them to work through the problem entirely on their own. At the end of the session, I will ask to explain the core concepts behind what we have covered and ask foundational questions to ensure that we have understood core concepts rather than specific examples.

While my primary experience is in post-secondary tutoring, I also have ~1 year experience tutoring high school students. As such, I have lessons prepared for the following subjects across the High School and University Levels:
Algebra (any kind, all levels)
Calculus (I-III and Multivariable/Vector, including AP/IB)
Differential Equations
Linear/Matrix Algebra
Abstract Algebra
Real Analysis
Set Theory
Proof-writing/Foundational Mathematics
Statistics
Applications of Mathematics
Geometry
Trigonometry
