About James
I am a third year mechanical engineering student at the University of Bristol, who studied Maths Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-levels, and am experienced in cross-cultural communication through a wide range of extra-curricular activities, programmes and volunteering. I am also a competitive runner at university and active member of my Church, which has taught me how to manage time carefully, so I will ensure my students also get the most out of their time. I come from a family of teachers and have sensed the achievement of both tackling a subject myself, and leading peers and pupils into the place of understanding also. I take interest in LEGO, sports, technology, reading and gaming, but particularly get excited about the practical outworking of engineering in things like carpentry and epic projects such as Bloodhound LSR (The British land speed record attempt).

One hour lessons as standard, but happy to do more or less to tailor lessons to your needs. GCSE and A-level standard is my preferred age group, but have experience tutoring pupils down to reception years. I tend to encourage students to attempt increasingly difficult questions in a subject, until they find one that they are unable to do, and then use that to teach the concepts - similar to a case-based teaching method. This is always a good opportunity to incorporate application into the learning as well. If you are struggling with a threshold concept (fundamental idea critical to further understanding), I will take the lesson back to that threshold concept and will consolidate that, rather than struggling on with questions. This is a method I have used in my 5 years previous experience as a private tutor both at a company and freelance. I encourage students to grapple with concepts, as this is often where the most learning occurs, and then celebrate afterwards!

Really great support for anyone in need of help. Super friendly and supportive and has really been a great help!
James is an incredibly talented tutor; he is very communicable and always answers any of my questions with detail and enthusiasm.
James tutored me for my GCSEs, helping mainly with maths, but also assisting me with some of my sciences when needed. James is a very knowledgeable young man and helped me a lot to be able to obtain a grade 8 in the sciences and maths for my GCSEs. All of our sessions together were very productive and I always felt that I was in a better position within that subject after a session. James has a very friendly yet professional method of working with you, which I think works very well. Without all the help I received from James, I probably wouldn’t have been able to go on to study maths or chemistry at A-level, he helped me build my confidence when answering questions, which has been invaluable during my exams. If you or your child are considering getting some extra help with a subject, I think you may have found one of the best people on here.
