About John
My background as a UC Irvine graduate in Biological Sciences and Dean’s Honor Roll recipient forms the foundation of my academic approach. Over the years, I have served as a peer mentor, swim instructor, STEM tutor, and basketball coach. Coaching sports is surprisingly similar to tutoring academic subjects: both require breaking down complex techniques into manageable steps, identifying underlying mistakes, and adapting your strategy to match each individual's unique strengths.
As a published biomedical researcher and former lab assistant, I bring strong scientific rigor to my teaching while remaining deeply focused on building genuine self-belief. Whether I am guiding a student through high-level STEM concepts or directing plays on the court, my goal is to foster critical thinking. I am committed to providing a structured, highly professional, and supportive environment that empowers students to reach their full potential both academically and personally.

My goal as a tutor is to help students move beyond simple pattern recognition and build true, lasting confidence in STEM.
My Teaching Approach
Memorization and pattern recognition are useful, but deep understanding comes from knowing why a step works—and learning from why an answer is wrong. I build custom questions based on the exact topics my students are working on, challenging them to reason through problems step-by-step. Catching the logic behind a mistake creates a lightbulb moment that stays with a student far longer than just guessing the right answer.
Typical Lesson Plan
• Targeted Review: We start by identifying specific sticking points in current homework, concepts, or upcoming exams.
• Guided Problem Solving: We work through key problems together, using active reasoning to fix underlying misconceptions.
• Independent Practice: The student solves similar problems on their own to solidify their skills, self-correction, and confidence.
