About Alexandra
I am a highly achieving second-year undergraduate student of Comparative Literature, with Latin as my main language, holding prestigious scholarships and various prizes in a number of disciplines, including English and Latin. Previously I have studied for a BA in English at Moscow State University.
I have several years of experience working with children from a variety of ages and backgrounds – from first-year students at University College London to children with disabilities and from less advantaged backgrounds. I have taught several subjects, including:

My teaching methods vary depending on the subject and the student – see below:
LATIN
I teach Latin for beginners both in groups and on a one-to-one basis and am open to working with adults and children alike. My approach to teaching is very structured, as I like to teach the grammar very thoroughly. But at the same time I have always aimed not just to explain grammatical concepts but to help the students get to grips with the language and really enjoy reading Latin. I use various techniques, such as:
• Reading engaging texts in simple Latin that offer an insight into Classical culture and myth.
• Reading short extracts from Classical authors to get a taste of real Latin and enhance vocabulary.
• Teaching the basics of scansion and poetic metre.
I am very flexible with my teaching plans and can adapt the lessons specifically to the student's needs – whether your aim is to succeed at Common Entrance exams or you want a good base for further independent study.
ENGLISH as a second language
I teach ESL from intermediate to advanced level, mainly preparing for language examinations such as the Cambridge Certificate (I myself hold a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English). I am flexible with my teaching methods and can adapt them to the students' needs, shifting the focus as necessary to conversational aspects of the language, writing skills, grammar and spelling, etc. However, my main aim is always to teach grammar very thoroughly and make sure the student can apply it in writing and conversation. I also believe that the best way to get to grips with the language is through reading classical literature, so I have always used engaging texts that help to enhance the student's vocabulary and understanding of grammatical concepts.
Aside from this, I work on my students' pronunciation, explaining the phonetical structure of the English language and doing exercises that help them acquire a neutral accent.
ACADEMIC WRITING
I usually combine general but essential essay-writing guidance with working on the student's specific needs. Whatever stage you are at with your essay, presentation or project, I can help! From explaining the basics to someone who has never written an academic text before to reviewing your work before submission.

Details
Sessions longer or shorter than one hour will be charged pro rata. If a session runs overtime, I do not charge for the extra time.
There is no additional charge for travel costs, but I prefer to tutor in North and Central London.
There is no additional charge for a second student (although it is advised in this case to make the session half an hour longer)
