Find out more about Lyester

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring while I was at University. I signed up for a mentoring program that recruited senior students to tutor first-year Law students. My love for tutoring developed as the students whom I was mentoring, under my wing, started passing their subjects with distinctions. I knew then I was doing something right.
  • Tell us more about the subject or subjects you teach, the topics and techniques you like to discuss with/demonstrate to students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor undergraduate law modules which include: Commercial law, Administrative Law, International Law, Business Law, Criminal and Civil law. I also tutor modules for Business-related modules like Business Management and Business Administration. My classes are interactive, where I give complete freedom to students to ask questions, and then further delve into more profound theories and co-relate with practical and day-to-day scenarios. Each lesson is structured with course material together with case law and relevant legislation.
  • Do you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you? Tell us who, and why.

I was inspired by my grade 1 teacher Mrs Myles, she taught me how to read and write when I was just six years old and was so patient with me that I became the top-performing pupil in my class. However, the person who inspires me the most in my line of work is Professor Mamokgethi Phankeng who is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Capetown. She is my inspiration because she is a black educated and successful woman in a top leadership position in one of the best Universities in Africa, and she is the first black woman to do so in the history of the University of Cape Town.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good teacher or tutor?

Some of the qualities of a good teacher are Patience, being an excellent communicator, adaptability and flexibility, lifelong love for learning and dedication.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your schooldays?

One time during my online tutoring session with my student I started presenting slides of a different subject and the student stopped me and said I had mistaken them for another student because it was their first time learning that subject. Turns out I had opened the wrong slides.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing at school or during yo training?

The difficult challenges I faced during my training are that I didn't have a tutor to help me when I faced some difficulties in my academics. I had to figure it out by myself through studying and sometimes having study groups with friends because the lecturers were not always available to attend to all the student's needs.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

Teaching is my passion I connect with students when I teach and I love it. I aspire to be a Professor and I am working towards obtaining a PhD. I want to be able to hold seminars and lectures teaching students from all around the world.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

My drive and dedication to helping as many students as I can to reach their academic goals make me a Superprof.
  • Is there anything else you would like your students to know about you?

I am an easy-going person with an inviting personality and I make learning fun and enjoyable for students.
