About Irene
Experienced tutor specialising in politics, political economy, international relations and university admissions.
I teach A Level and university students, and have experience teaching undergraduate students at the London School of Economics.
I also support applicants preparing for competitive university admissions, including personal statements, admissions tests, interviews and academic writing
Alongside teaching, I have worked across government, think tanks and academia, which allows me to connect academic ideas to contemporary political and institutional issues. I aim to make demanding material clear, structured and engaging, while helping students develop confidence in their own thinking and communication.
Part of my own education was in French and Chinese, so I understand the additional challenges faced by students studying complex subjects in a second language. I have experience working with both UK and international students.
Education:
BA Law, University of Oxford
MA Legal and Political Theory, UCL
LLM International Law, LSE
PhD in Law, LSE”

My teaching is shaped around the level, goals and learning style of each student. I focus on breaking difficult concepts into manageable parts, showing how topics connect to one another, and using current affairs, historical examples and practical cases to make theory easier to grasp and remember.
I also encourage students to see politics and economics historically. Institutions and systems can appear fixed or natural when taught in abstract terms, but understanding how they developed through conflict, political choices and social change can make difficult topics much clearer and more engaging.
Alongside subject knowledge, I help students develop confidence in discussion, essay writing and independent judgement. Strong academic work is not only about memorising content, but about learning how to think clearly, form persuasive arguments and communicate ideas effectively.
I can also support exam technique, coursework, dissertations and university admissions preparation. Having studied at Oxford, UCL and LSE, I can offer practical guidance on navigating demanding academic environments and competitive applications.

- A very capable student with great academic potentialIrene's response :
Perfect! Our first lesson was delivered in a clear and concise way. Helped me to grasp the topics quickly.
- A bright, spirited student who brings curiosity and enthusiasm to our politics discussions. She engages thoughtfully with different arguments and is a pleasure to teach.Irene's response :
Perfect! Irene is an excellent tutor for my child, who is taking Edexcel A-level Politics. She explains things clearly and helps understand what the examiners are looking for, particularly when it comes to essays. They work on developing arguments, weighing up different views and choosing examples that evidence the arguments. She's adamant that essay work is just as much a way of mastering the subject, so all the material become part of an engaging discussion. There’s room to ask questions and talk through ideas, as well as practical help with writing. I would happily recommend her.
Perfect! Dr Irene was a very kind and helpful tutor. She helped me articulate my thoughts and guided me to become a better critical thinker. I'm very grateful for her support.
Perfect! Irene is an excellent tutor. She's friendly and easy to communicate. I'm glad I've found her here! She's amazing. Thanks so much, Irene.
Perfect! Irene is a first-class tutor who is flexible, communicative, and incredibly helpful. Her depth of knowledge is highly impressive, and on a personal level, she is exceptionally kind, patient, and understanding. I therefore highly recommend Irene.
- Excellent student, very thoughtful and lovely to teachIrene's response :
Perfect! Working with Irene honestly made a big difference to my confidence and how I approach politics. She’s really good at explaining complicated ideas in a way that actually makes sense, and she pushes you to think a bit deeper rather than just memorising things. Her knowledge of the Oxford admissions process was also super helpful. She helped me get what interviewers are actually looking for, suggested really good reading and gave really detailed feedback.
- Jane is a really wonderful student, curious, smart and critical. I look forward to continue working with her :)Irene's response :

We have tried a few tutors but Irene was a breath of fresh air for my daughter! She was able to clearly explain detailed concepts and cover topics that previously have been challenging for Mia and actually make it interesting to learn. Irene is incredibly calming and her knowledge and understanding is extensive yet she has a natural ability to make students feel comfortable. We highly recommend Irene, she is a life saver!
Irene tutored me for A-level Politics when I was struggling to turn all the information in my head into an actual argument. She was really good at working out exactly where I was getting stuck and explaining things in a way that finally made sense, without making me feel awkward for asking basic or slightly random questions.
I liked that we would sometimes spend most of a lesson pulling apart a single essay question. By the end I could actually see why my paragraphs weren’t answering the question and how to fix them. I became much less stressed about essays and started feeling like I actually understood the subject.Irene was such a help for my niece when she needed it: always supportive, attentive, and very ready to adjust to her needs. Whether in preparation for exams or for her end of year essays, Irene was there to help her navigate the tricky parts of the curriculum. I'd definitely recommend her to parents out there!
Irene was one of the best lecturers I had at university. She has a real talent for making political economy feel alive, and for showing why the ideas actually matter rather than just teaching theories from a textbook. I always looked forward to her classes because they were challenging without ever feeling intimidating, and she encouraged us to question things instead of simply accepting the right answer. She also cared a lot about her students. She was generous with her time, gave really thoughtful feedback on essays, and was always willing to talk through ideas if you were stuck. I came away from her course feeling much more confident in my own thinking and writing.
I had the privilege of having Irene as a tutor and she was fantastic. I would definitely recommend her to others. She was patient, kind, and always took the time to explain things to me in a way that was straightforward and easy to understand.
