Rather than teaching to the test, I make sure my students have a thorough understanding of the assigned literature or media so they are prepared to answer any question the test throws at them. I will walk them through the text, identifying major themes and symbols, key quotes, and wider context (implications for society, historical context.) Then I will teach them how to structure a cohesive essay and argument. Starting with an introduction that introduces the essay's central argument or thesis, paragraphs that develop the argument with supporting evidence (one idea per paragraph is wise), and a conclusion that summarizes key points and offers a final thought (wider context is good here). I can also teach creative writing to students working on creative portfolios for English. A typical lesson will be one or two hours, but if the student needs more time I am more than happy to accommodate.
Currently, I am teaching students from year three to year eight. I can also teach year nine to thirteen, and am intimately familiar with the NCEA curriculum. With my primary school students, I use the oxford discover student book and the national geographic learning book on great writing as a reference, guiding my students through the exercises. I also come up with my own exercises to make the class more fun and interactive. With my year eight student, I help her with her assignments and write practice essays with her.
