About Jo

I have been tutoring since 2014 as I wanted to pass on some of the fantastic teaching I was lucky enough to have on the violin and viola! I have tutored a range of tutees, from ages 6 to 56, and have taught absolute beginners of both violin and viola.

I started learning the violin aged 6 and gained a government scholarship aged 13 to study at a specialist music school where I studied violin, viola and singing. In sixth form, I attended Junior Guildhall and was a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and then went on to study Music at Oxford University where I performed two recitals on viola as part of my Finals examinations.

About the lesson

I don't have a rigid method of teaching as my approach depends on what it is the person is wanting to achieve or work on in the lessons. I am very happy to discuss what your particular aims are in learning the instrument and am flexible in what kinds of music you might want to learn to play. With previous tutees I have taught folk and fiddle music and Arabic music as well as traditional Western classical music. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about learning the violin or the viola or any music-related questions!

Perfect! Had a few lessons with Jo at her home, and I had a large progress on the viola after just three lessons! She’s so nice and so patient! Also very encouraging, will make you full of confidence to play, and this is the most important thing for a beginner! She’s also a nice person to have a conversation with about things even outside music. Not only is she good at playing the instrument itself, but she’s also experienced at planning for the future direction of where students would like to take their playing to, eg I want to play in a quartet so Jo would make me try some viola extract from a Mozart quartet. It was so lucky to find her!
