About Paul
I am a highly experienced musician and teacher with over 40 years of playing experience and more than 20 years teaching in classroom settings.
My main instruments are guitar and mandolin, and over the years I’ve performed in a wide variety of bands and musical settings, predominantly folk, but also rock. Alongside live performance, I’ve played in pit bands for theatre productions and have composed original music for plays. This broad musical background allows me to introduce students not just to playing an instrument, but to music as a creative and expressive skill.
I hold Grade 8 Rock Guitar and Grade 5 Music Theory, providing strong technical and theoretical foundations that underpin my teaching.
Having now retired from classroom teaching, I focus mainly on one-to-one lessons, allowing each student to receive individual attention. Lessons are carefully tailored to suit each child’s age, experience, and learning style, whether they are complete beginners or progressing towards exams. My lessons are structured, encouraging, and enjoyable, with a strong emphasis on: Good technique and musical habits Confidence and motivation Music reading, listening, and understanding Supporting school music learning or exam preparation My aim is to help musicians grow in confidence and develop a lasting love of music.

I am a professional teacher with over 20 years’ classroom experience, I have advanced DBS check and a PGCE. I am now specialising in one-to-one tuition for adults and children. Whether you’re a complete beginner, returning to the guitar after a break, or looking to refine your playing, lessons are fully tailored to your personal goals.
I teach using London College of Music and Registry of Guitar Tutors curriculum but there is no need to work towards grades.
Moving away from classroom teaching will allow me to focus on personalised instruction, giving students the time, attention, and flexibility they deserve. Lessons adapt to your pace and interests—whether you want to play for enjoyment, improve technique, explore new styles, or work towards grades. My teaching style is friendly, patient, and practical, with an emphasis on: Enjoyable, pressure-free learning Clear explanations and achievable progress Developing confidence and musical understanding, Learning music should be inspiring and rewarding, and my aim is to help you enjoy every step of the journey.

As an adult learner I’ve been having acoustic (and occasionally electric) guitar lessons with Paul for 2+ years and have progressed from beginner to grade 4 + standard during this time. Paul is infinitely patient and encouraging and I would have no hesitation in recommending him.
