About Cynthia
Prior to my retirement, I spent years working in teaching and learning on the college level, setting up remediation labs and supervising tutors, helping to assess student competencies, developing remediation plans, fostering academic growth and, hopefully, helping reluctant students find academic success and fall in love with the art and science of learning.
I spent seven years as president of a junior college; during that time I redeveloped the academic, fiscal and physical focus of the institution, spearheading its acquisition of institutional accreditation. Formulating a cohesive, comprehensive academic experience for students from diverse backgrounds and skill levels required both action and listening.
I am competent to teach in a number of academic disciplines, including English grammar, writing and literature, music composition, theory, vocal and instrumental performance, and nearly any discipline in the humanities and/or social sciences. However, usually, when asked what I teach, my reply sets out my ultimate intention: I teach students.

My experience in student success preparation comes out of a career in teaching and learning, curriculum development and passionate advocacy for life long learning. I have worked with all ages and ability levels, having spent the bulk of my "official" teaching duties with college students. In tutoring, it is my goal to adapt the exercises and examples to the audience I am approaching. I have the gift to present complex ideas in terms that are easily understood by whatever audience I am working with, even when the target group is not homogenous.
I believe students learn best when they study something they are interested in, so I try to adapt my lessons towards the students' areas of interest. To accomplish that goal requires a period of "getting to know" the student, of understanding their strengths and growing edges. Good teachers are excellent listeners.
I work to remove blocks to successful skill acquisition, to engage students around areas of interest in order to get and hold their attention, and to make the learning experience as enjoyable as possible.
