About Joseph
I am a recent physics graduate with a long history of tutoring. Most of my university career was spent undertaking some form of tutoring; through my job as a professional tutor and my Peer to peer teaching and learning course, both of which demanded a high level of competency and each strengthened different parts of my tutoring skillset.
The teaching course required me to adapt my tutoring style accordingly to better fit a peer-based tutoring system. In addition to this, it was essential that I worked with my fellow tutors to structure and set out the basic frameworks for each tutorial session, as no lecturers or professors were present.
In my capacity as professional tutor, I was required to plan and structure lessons for the multiple students I was tutoring, adapting and changing them to fit the needs of the student, particularly if a piece of work or topic suddenly took precedent over another. This, in combination with previous experiences of tutoring before university mean I have tutored a wide range of ages and tailored my tutoring towards both SQA national qualifications and G.C.S.E exams as well as other key stages of education. This has given me years to modify, improve and adapt my tutoring method for a large number of different sessions.

A good tutoring session is all about balance. I need to balance the needs of the student, the style of learning best suited to them, with the restrictions and bounds set by the curriculum. Perhaps more important is the task of gently guiding the student to the answer/solution, without giving to much away, which can lead to the student getting the answer but without a deeper understanding of the meaning/concepts behind it. Understanding, rather than memorising is the key to information retention and serious long-term learning.
