Have a life Make friends... ...keep them! Be interested in things outside medicine, participate in a community, read great literature while on call (besides PubMed). Talk to patients, listen to patients. The science, the discipline, the rigor and obsessiveness are necessary to be a physician, but to be a good physician requires a human connection that school is better at wringing out of you than it is at teaching. To be a great physician is to take each a step further. Medical school is the time to start nurturing these traits. Learn now what the person who graduates at the bottom of your class will be called: Doctor. Just like everyone else in the class. Accept a "B" in anatomy, leave the building before dark and sing in a choir, join your buddies and have the world's worst all-medical student band, walk your neighbor's dog. Have neighbors... I am amazed how few of my students and residents can discuss, or have even read, the literature that is considered the foundation, or at least mirror, of modern culture. I would make that a mandatory part of medical school. There is such a big, big world outside of medicine. And that's the world where our patients live (and so do we!). In other words, be a complete person. Very few physicians are, really, very few people are, but they are the ones who change the world.
