About Bella

My teaching philosophy for saxophone revolves around helping students develop strong fundamentals while inspiring their personal creativity and musical identity. Technical mastery—breath control, embouchure, finger dexterity, posture, articulation, tone production, and intonation—is the core of every lesson, providing the tools for expressive playing. I customize instruction to each student’s needs, skill level, and musical preferences, integrating improvisation early to build confidence and musical intuition. I use scale and mode exercises, ear training, and interactive improvisation activities to develop fluency and expressiveness. Music theory is integrated contextually, linking concepts to pieces and improvisation, making learning relevant and applicable. I encourage students to explore diverse genres—jazz, blues, pop, and classical—to maintain engagement and broaden their musical horizons. Goal setting and consistent practice routines are emphasized for steady progress, with technology such as recording tools and play-along tracks enhancing practice effectiveness and self-evaluation. A particularly meaningful teaching moment was guiding a student through their first successful performance after months of dedicated work on improvisation and technique. Ultimately, I aim to develop saxophonists who are technically skilled, creatively free, and deeply connected to their music.

Teaching saxophone is about guiding students to discover both the technical skills and the expressive freedom that make this instrument so powerful and versatile. My philosophy centers on fostering strong fundamentals such as breath control, embouchure strength, tone quality, articulation clarity, and finger dexterity while encouraging creativity through improvisation, composition, and personal expression.

I believe that every lesson should blend discipline with joy, helping students develop confidence and a unique musical voice. Early on, I integrate music theory, ear training, and jazz harmony so students understand the language of music and can apply it to improvisation and ensemble playing. I tailor lessons to each student's goals, whether that means transcribing solos from legends like Sonny Rollins, exploring modal scales, or jamming to contemporary grooves.

My teaching incorporates play-along tracks, improvisational games, and call-and-response exercises to sharpen listening skills and spontaneity. I break improvisation down into accessible components such as scale selection, melodic contour, rhythmic variation, and phrasing to empower students to create their own musical statements. Technology enhances our lessons through recording tools, slow-downer apps, and looping devices, allowing students to analyze their playing and experiment with layering sounds.

One of my most rewarding experiences was working with a student who initially struggled with sight-reading and technical skills but flourished through an ear-based approach combined with creative improvisation, ultimately leading their own band. I strive to create a supportive environment where students feel free to explore, take risks, and grow into confident saxophonists who can communicate deeply through their music.
