I work with each student's individual weaknesses; I am a very good listener and am able to pinpoint exactly which areas they find confusing. I don't spoon-feed or try and force my interpretation onto students; rather, I give them the tools to understand the texts themselves. I am a big fan of using other forms of media (film, music) in order to keep students interested in the lessons. I never want literature to seem 'boring'. As a writer, I am very big on essay structure and technique, and have a tried-and-tested method that will allow students to hit all of the criteria during exams. I take a similar approach with Sociology, rooting it in the real world, and using humour/analogies to help students remember things.
Hello! My name is Umi and I am currently studying English at UCL. I am passionate about all forms of literature, and am hoping to become a writer/journalist someday. Having achieved 13 GCSE's and 3 A*'s at A-Level (English, Sociology, RS), I believe that I am well-qualified to help others succeed in exams. My area of specialism is English Literature, but I am also well read in Sociology, and achieved full marks in my Sociology GCSE.
I have previously tutored two students at GCSE level English, and used to assist in drama classes for small children. In terms of writing, I am a published poet, and regularly perform at spoken word events. I was runner-up in the Goldsmith's Young Writer Prize 2019.
