A violin has four strings tuned to the notes G, D, A and E, from lowest to highest.

• G string: It sits closest to the chin and gives the violin its dark, mellow voice.
• D string: It provides a warm, resonant sound ideal for expressive playing.
• A string: It sits just below the highest string and is tuned to 440 Hz in standard pitch.
• E string: It requires precise finger placement because small errors become very audible.

The interval between each pair of strings is a perfect fifth.

Once you can tune and recognise each string, you can start building finger patterns.

• No frets: Even a millimetre off can make a note sound sharp or flat.
• Bowing technique: The angle, pressure and speed of the bow all affect tone quality.
