About Tom
I am a student studying an undergraduate BA in Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Essex, which I will be going into my third year of in October. For the last two years, I have been on the Dean's list, achieving one of the highest grades of anyone in the degree. I was also employed as a student mentor at the university, providing support in literature, philosophy, and history at foundation year level (A-level equivalent).

I use a specific mind-map technique for revision, using key-phrases as prompts for the mind to fill in with its own knowledge, rather than long, written descriptions, which can be hard to remember and quite overwhelming. I also utilise phonic techniques for memorising. For example, while mentoring in philosophy, I got students to remember that Descartes was a rationalist because his first name was 'Rene' and the R of that name was the prompt for Rationalist. He also had an analogy to his philosophy involving apples, so the 'cart' sound of his name was the prompt for the phrase and image of a 'cart of apples', in order to remember the analogy. With my extensive knowledge, I could apply such techniques to literature and remembering characters, settings, descriptions, etc., as well as theories related to the texts, and for the students to remember how they can go about analysing a text. I am also proficient at creating Powerpoint presentations to relay information. I like to use colour and images in order to make the info more vivid in the students mind, rather than just copying and pasting long passages of text.
