As a mathematics teacher, I deliver maths lessons across KS2-KS5 and post-16 to SATs, GCSE, A 'level, apprenticeship and adult students. I use diagnostic assessment to understand current standings of my students and to help tailor my teaching to their individual learning needs.
I'm dedicated to bringing young people's learning to life and motivating them to become confident learners.
I have a background and postgraduate qualifications in chemistry and the geosciences, and have most recently obtained a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics Education.
I have, over the past year, gained practical experience of working with and teaching young children in middle and secondary schools (KS2-KS5), and post 16 students in apprenticeship and FE college settings. Through these experiences, I have learnt the need to adapt my teaching to different age groups, abilities, and scenarios. For example, I have used captivating graphics, videos, other digital/ICT learning tools, and concrete objects to demonstrate tricky mathematical concepts. I have used memorable phrases and songs to help my least able Year 6 pupils remember subject-specific terms, acronyms, conventions, notations, expressions etc.
I have also used latest exam-styled questions to help prepare my students for their forthcoming new grade 9-1 GCSE exams. I appreciate the need to use regular and varied assessment methods to track students’ progress, as well as detect and address any learning gaps or concerns.
My education and training portfolio demonstrate my passion for education which drives me to support and motivate my students to aspire for the greatest height in all that they set out to achieve. I certainly desire to impact young people’s education by helping them to learn mathematics and continually improve their competence and fluency in the subject. I also always promote literacy in, and through mathematics by encouraging correct spellings, good work presentation and accurate use of mathematical terminologies.
My strong subject (maths) knowledge has always been powerful and effective skill which I have used to help my students understand the impact and application of various maths topics to their (real) world.
I have given mathematics lessons to Year 6 - 11 pupils (~28 pupils/class) and have tutored small groups in preparation for major exams such as GCSE. I have been part of intervention sessions for SATs pupils requiring extra support; the results showed an overall achievement of over 10% more than in the previous years.
