About Ellen

I hold a MSc in Applied Mathematics and a First-Class Honours BSc in Mathematics & Economics. I am a friendly, warm and compassionate teacher who enjoys enormous satisfaction upon seeing a student make progress. I am aware that confidence is the main issue faced by students when it comes to mathematics and so I adapt the content of my lessons to allow students to learn at their own pace. I provide constant encouragement and a comfortable environment for students to ask questions. Every student has the potential to excel and I believe I have the expertise to help them get there.

I have always loved Maths but I am also a huge people person, and so teaching is the clear combination of my passions. I use my passion for Maths to inject life into a subject that a lot of people find boring or frustrating by using real world and relevant examples. I use my people skills to ensure that our lessons will be a 2 way conversation, where I listen to your feedback and use it to help tailor future lessons.

About the lesson

My classes are primarily problem based as I believe that mathematics is learnt through practice and not theory alone. In my sessions I introduce a small amount of theory before working through an example problem together. I adapt the lessons upon seeing which aspect of the problem you are struggling with most and gear the problems in the rest of the lesson to focus on these areas.

My experience includes 3 years of teaching experience at Glasgow University teaching A-level Maths to foundation students, 2 years as a teaching assistant while completing my MSc at Utrecht University and 2 years of private tuition of Nat 5, GCSE and Scottish Highers level.

I am Glasgow based and so I am available to teach Nat 5 and Scottish Highers in person or online, and available to teach GCSE and A-level online. Sessions are typically an hour but I am open to longer.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
