I like my lessons to be fast paced with a clear structure. The student will know what we will be covereing in the session through learning objectives and this will be referred to throughout. Seeing how a student is progressing throughout is just as important to the student as it is to me.
Like with physical exercise, we need to warm our brains up so we are ready to learn. I do this by doing a fun starter activity, not necessarily related to the main part of the lesson but something fun and involving games and healthy competition with myself.
Some theory behind the content of the lesson is explained with some examples I work through.
Students are set questions to complete and receive instant feedback.
I finish off with past exam questions linked to the topic covered in the session.
Students will tell me three new things they have learnt and what they still need to work on.
Homework is optional but can be set and marked after the student has completed it.
I studied Mathematical Education at Manchester Metropolitan University and have worked in a range of schools across Manchester and London. The most challenging but rewarding role was working with students who had been permanently excluded from mainstream education. The two years working at the Pupil Referral Unit made me understand that all students have the right to learn and giving them a suitable learning environment is like giving them a second chance at education.
