I am a very friendly, patient person who is willing to learn how you learn best in order to help. I also enjoy making anything I do as fun as possible, so I will try my best to make our lessons engaging. Most importantly, I don't believe in silly questions; ask away, ask me a million times, as long as you try your best to remember and learn from the answers, I'll repeat it as much as you need me to.
In terms of my approach, I would begin by figuring out what you find difficult, see what you already know and then focus on your weak points. Then we can negotiate how often you feel comfortable meeting up for per week/what seems necessary in terms of your skill level.
Each lesson would start off with a small task to "get the ball rolling" so to speak; perhaps a riddle of some sort. Then we will apply these skills to general skills that can be used in your work.
The lessons themselves will be catered to your needs - perhaps more reading tasks if comprehension is your weak point, or lessons to do with spelling if that is what you find difficult. At the end of each lesson we will go through what has been learnt, figure out a way to apply it at some point before we next meet (so we can see that the lesson has kind of stuck) and talk about what you might want to do the next time we meet.
During lessons I will offer handy tips for general use and also make sure that you leave each lesson retaining knowledge rather than completing tasks purely to complete them.
I have achieved an A in English during my GCSEs and an A in A-level English. I have entered a few poetry competitions through Young Writers and have had work successfully published via their program. I am currently taking an Undergraduate course in Film and Creative Writing, so I am still very actively using my current skills in writing and learning some new ones too.
During my time in Sixth Form I was part of a Reading Partners Programme in which I helped a Year 7 student improve on their reading skills. I believe her efforts and dedication to to showing up and carrying out homework meant we were able to work together effectively and her skills improved as the year progressed. Her improvement helped me realised helping others with English-based topics is something I could and would like to do.
My own curiosity of English overall means that I will be learning too, so I can teach you some new things as I learn them also.
I think my patience and determination help in terms of my tutoring as it makes sessions more effective. My desire to also make sessions fun means that we will work well together and get a lot done.
Rates will vary based on travel time and amount of hours only, the student's skill level will not affect rates.
