"It should be possible to explain the laws of physics to a barmaid." -Albert Einstein
You're right Alby; physics should be more simple than we claim it to be. The laws, rules, and theories of physics should be known by all people to create an educated generation with thinking people who care about their surroundings and the scientifical world around them. And if Albert Einstein recognised the fact that physics should be explained more simply, he's right! But, why is physics such a problematic academic discipline that makes students sigh with pain?
Well, for starters, the way that physics is taught leaves a lot to be desired. The National Education System in the UK does its best to make education engaging and thought-provoking; however, it is essential to state that each child or teenager is a distinct world with so many unique characteristics. Therefore, learning physics is an entirely different experience for each person, and some may react to methods that others do not like at all. Finding a balance and realising that physics teachers are imperfect humans doing the best they can help pupils conclude that seeking remedial help in certain situations is the only solution.
Another challenge observed by students studying physics is that they approach the subject with the same principles they follow in chemistry and biology, which couldn't be more of a mistake. When you start examining a new topic in the wrong way, you quickly get frustrated since your study habits are erroneous, and you do not see any improvements on test results. Physics is a conceptual study and needs to be accepted for what it is from the get-go and not be compared with similar subjects. Why? So that success is imminent. Another challenge that well-intentioned students struggle with is the fact that physics features diabolical theories, principles, and laws that must be memorised to excel during exams. Some pupils additionally wrestle with the fact that they might not possess the skills to apply theoretical knowledge into problem-solving skills. While it sounds like something trivial that can eventually be worked on, it is much easier for those who can analyse theory and problem solve like a boss. Before concluding this section, it's important to mention that struggles experienced while reviewing physics can be overcome; you got this!
Hated by many and loved by various, physics has gained a reputation for being one of the most divisive subjects studied during secondary school and Uni. Viewed as necessary to succeed by many well-intentioned professors, it can be said that physics is as essential as maths, language skills, and sciences. Nonetheless, since all exam boards do not require it in the UK during a few Key Stages, many have chosen to skip the review of physics in favour of more interesting subjects such as foreign languages, new history, or arts.
Brilliant reasons to study physics include the fact that you will better understand maths, physics can get you more job offers in the field of science, and physics explains the world that we live in. Also, do you realise how many things are made possible with physics? For instance, everyday items that are used every day such as grocery store scanners, space rockets, light bulbs, cars, cell phones, DVD players, computers, and flatscreen TVs, to name a few. It's quite mindboggling to recognise how much a careful review of physics can make things possible; we very often take it for granted! Physics are behind practically all of the technology that we use daily. As if we can't praise physics enough, it is one of the best topics for those who are curious about the world around them and want answers to questions such as, 'why is the sky blue?' and 'why does global warming affect some species more than others?' If you think physics is boring, you're much mistaken; it is one of the most versatile subjects on the planet!
Like maths, biology, chemistry, history, geography, and many other academic disciplines, physics is a subject that requires a lot of remedial help better to understand the concepts, theories, and laws. So, what can be done? The education industry has drastically shifted since the COVID-19 pandemic, and in-person tutoring is not recommended due to safety issues, online education has become the norm. Therefore, instead of receiving face-to-face remedial support with a physics tutor at a coffee shop near you, consider the possibility of using Superprof to hire an online physics tutor.
