About Esther

Hi, I’m Esther, a History undergraduate at Jesus College, University of Oxford.

I’ve loved History for as long as I can remember. What hooked me wasn’t the dates and facts but the arguments: why things happened, who gets to tell the story, and how to make a convincing case. Studying at Oxford has taught me how to think and write like a historian, and helping younger students discover that same confidence is one of the most rewarding things I do.

I have experience tutoring GCSE students one-to-one, and many of my students have improved by two or three grades, moving from 4s, 5s and 6s to 7s, 8s and 9s. Alongside private tutoring, I volunteer with the Oxford Hub’s Schools Plus programme, supporting GCSE students in state schools across Oxford. Working with students of different abilities and backgrounds has taught me that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Every student learns differently, and my job is to find what works for you.

I know first-hand how stressful exams can feel, having been through GCSEs and A-levels recently myself. I’m patient, encouraging and organised, and I take my students’ progress seriously. You can expect punctual lessons, clear communication with parents, and honest feedback that shows you exactly how to improve.

About the lesson

I’m a History undergraduate at Oxford University, and I offer online History tutoring for GCSE and A-level students. Last year I tutored GCSE students who came to me working at grades 4–6, and they went on to achieve 7s, 8s and 9s. I also volunteer as a tutor with the Oxford Hub’s Schools Plus programme, supporting GCSE students in local schools.

History rewards students who can argue, not just remember. My lessons build both. We start by making sure the core knowledge is secure, using timelines, key-event summaries and quick recall quizzes, so that it sticks. Then we focus on what actually earns marks: writing analytical paragraphs, making a sustained argument, evaluating sources and interpretations, and reaching a clear judgement. I teach exam technique closely tied to your specification (AQA, Edexcel, OCR and others), including how to read a question, plan under timed conditions, and hit the mark scheme’s top levels.

Every lesson is tailored. If you’re struggling with essays, we write and improve them together. If you’re revising, we work through past papers and model answers. I give detailed written feedback on practice work between sessions so progress keeps going outside lessons.

Lessons are usually 60 minutes, which is long enough to cover content and practise writing without losing focus. 90-minute sessions are available for A-level essay work or intensive exam revision.
