My teaching is going topic by topic, focusing first on the students weaker topics, giving clear methods (with the simplest route to the answer and layout for maximizing marks) for common styles of questions that are likely to appear in an exam along with explanations that provide understanding of why the method works and the aim/outcome of the method.

As well as teaching students through ways in which they can engage in the information, I also provide them with techniques to ensure when they go home they can confidently and independently revise.
For me lesson planning is key and must be tailored to each students individual needs. For example the first few lessons should be utilised to understand the students strengths and weaknesses before tackling the problems head on. I believe the best way to teach must involve theory work followed by exam questions.

I have just retired after more than 25 years of teaching in sixth form colleges in the independent sector. I teach 11 plus, 13 plus, KS3, GCSE and A level students. I always explain the topics, discuss few examples and do problem solving during the lessons. This is followed by some homework and solving past papers. It also helps them to learn exam techniques.
