I found learning by example was most effective for me at school. After explaining the basic principles of the topic, I go through various examples that increase with difficulty. I highlight the part of the question that makes it harder than the previous example and explain how to tackle a problem of this format. As a recent student, I understand how important it is to be able to ask for help.
First, in my opinion, it is important to fix an objective (passing an exam, improving your knowledge in a specific field, etc.) Secondly, I believe that learning should be and can be fun - the lessons should be always adapted to the interests of the student. Finally, the lessons should be clear and the tutor should be able to explain everything in detail.
