With Maths, you either know it or you don't. Unlike subjective subjects like English or Art, there is no in-between. You can analyse or talk yourself out of a mathematical problem because the subject is down to numbers and values. Fact over fiction! But how can you be an expert in every single maths field? It's impossible!
If you aren't as gifted as the Maths giants that we hear of in books, then a private tutor can help you fill in the gaps in your Maths knowledge.
A tutor can also be useful in setting out a structured study programme for you ahead of exams, can help you to realise your areas of strength and weakness and, of course, they can also pass on their own knowledge, expertise, tips and tricks for Maths learning which could be invaluable.
So what are you waiting for? Don't feel like you are cheating on your teacher or that you are in any way undermining their teaching methods - they can't expect every pupil to learn in the same way and at the same speed so by keeping up with the class thanks to a tutor then you'll actually be saving your class teacher time and worry!
Maths is rarely described as one of the easiest subjects. So it makes sense that you shouldn't be able to tackle the whole programme alone. Even a Maths teacher at school teaching a whole curriculum won't be able to tell you everything! And the problem is, with school Maths covering such a wide area of the subject, it almost feels like you are moving onto a new topic every week before you've grasped the last one! This is partly because teachers don't have time to focus too heavily on each topic if they are to get through all of them.
It would be very ambitious to tackle all this alone, without some outside help, if you want to gain a really high grade.
A tutor can enhance the teaching that you receive from your actual class teacher and help you to learn more, faster in the long run.
As much as we'd love to tell you that there is a line that you will pass whereby you know pretty much everything you need to know about Maths, we'd be lying. Not even the famous Mathematicians knew absolutely every Maths question, and this is because subjects like Maths are always evolving.
So if you ask your teacher something in class that they can't answer or that they need to lookup, then don't think any less of them! Maths topics are highly complicated and could take someone a lifetime to learn and then they still wouldn't know every last detail!
Besides, mathematicians today are always discovering new things and finding new ways to look at the world from a Mathematical Science point of view. So even if you do get a pass in Maths or you achieve the highest possible grade in your exam, you're never done with Maths! This is what makes the subject so fascinating and interesting!
William George Spencer, a Mathematical writer, was born in Derby in 1790.
A pupil at his father's school, Spencer went on at the age of 17 to educate other pupils in algebra, astronomy, physics, and other Maths subjects, which he continued to do throughout his life. He had a gift, and he was noted for his teaching of girls without a difference, who made up a large number of his pupils which was quite unheard of at the time.
In his later years, Spencer returned to his birth city and became a Maths tutor. Imagine your tutor being named as a historical figure in hundreds of years to come!

Mia was extremely kind and organised during our consultation and gave me a clear understanding of how our lessons would plan out. Her approach to tutoring seems well-structured but also not too rigid and she is happy to adapt to the learning styles...
